WI: President Vallandigham, 1864 election?

What if President Vallandigham, 1864 election?

In 1864, the Democrats nominate Clement Vallandigham instead of George McClellan. In the election Vallandigham is able to take advantage of Civil Wars growing unpopularity, along with domestic issues such as the banking act and conscription act, to sweep the Midwest and win a close victory.

How does the war conclude under a Vallandigham presidency? What would post war United States look like under Vallandigham who famously said "it is the desire of my heart to restore the Union as it stood forty years ago."

For Vallandigham to get the Democratic nomination, much less win the election, the Confederates would have to be doing so well on the battlefield that the outcome of the war as a Confederate victory is no longer in doubt. Not exactly ASB in a literal sense, but close to it.

I'll put it this way: you'd need a different Clement Vallandigham-maybe had he not become a Copperhead, and one that was so deeply reactionary that he embarrassed some Southerners, he would have a much better chance of at least being considered for the nomination.

And even the pre-war Know Nothings, who had support on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, only won just one state in 1856: Maryland.(and there was little they could do to do any better, at least in terms of sheer votes). And if they couldn't do it, then OTL's Vallandigham certainly couldn't.

I had a feeling. ;) Still an interesting figure though.
