WI: President Earl Warren in 1952?

I have frequently seen the idea of Taft winning in 1952 in lieu of Eisenhower, but have yet to see (myself) anything where Warren won in 1952. However, I think this may be a good scenario for Warren. Taft was feared by many to be too Conservative, and his stances weren't really anything popularly followed for the era (at least so far as I know). So had Ike decided not to run, I think this could open a window for Warren as he was a member of the Liberal/Moderates, had been the VP on the 1948 GOP ticket, and could stand in as the favored force to compete with Taft.

The question is, therefore, could Warren secure the nomination, and if so what would follow?

I don't think Warren could win. He was seen as too close to Dewey, who by then was despised by the GOP base. IIRC he had very little support outside CA, being a favourite son. Like Gene McCarthy in '68, Warren could be kingmaker, but never king.
