WI:President Al Gore In The 90's?

The "Gore wins in 2000" has become something of a cliche in Alternate History, so what I'm wondering about is and Al Gore residency in the 1990's, most likely during the same time that Clinton was in office.

A few questions...

1) How could Gore get the Nomination for President in 1992? How could he defeat Bush as Clinton did?

2) Who would his VP be? What would his cabinet look like?

3) How would his Presidency go down? Would he be a two-termer of one-termer?

4)Who becomes President after him? Who would be President today?

IOTL Gore wasn't ready to run for President in '92

In August 1991, Gore announced that his son's accident had "left a deep impression on our family" and that it was a factor in his decision not to run for president during the 1992 presidential election. Gore stated: "I would like to be President [...] But I am also a father, and I feel deeply about my responsibility to my children [...] I didn't feel right about tearing myself away from my family to the extent that is necessary in a Presidential campaign." During this time, Gore wrote Earth in the Balance, a text which became the first book written by a sitting U.S. Senator to make the New York Times bestseller list since John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage
.
So one POD might be if his son isn't killed. Of course this will have an effect on Gore, in that it will remove whatever personal growth he underwent over that same period.

If nothing else changes, and he's in a 3-way race with Bush and Perot, he might still have fair a chance of winning. '96 against Dole, likely re-election; but I'm no Gore expert, and a President Gore might cause changes in the Republican nomination

I wonder if a POD change might occur if Clinton loses to Bush in 1992 (Perot drops out and doesn't come back in) and then Gore wins against VP Quayle in 1996? Maybe he goes on to lose in 2000 anyway?

If he doesn't write Earth in the Balance maybe he doesn't go on to An Inconvenient Truth. It would depend what effect his presidency had on him.

His son was killed IOTL, just injured. He ran for President in 1988 as a blue dog and got soundly thrashed.

I suppose if Clinton doesn't run he could try and run as a centrist DLC type Democrat that Clinton did.

However, I think part of the POD would have to be him not running in 88, because that run tagged him as a loser.

This thread reminds me of an episode of Family Guy where Al Gore becomes president and America (and the world by extension) became a utopia. :p

negative.

reading contemprary articles of the time he was NOT seen as a loser but actually as one of the favoured possibilites for 1992.

yes he lost but his position was closer to that of Romney today, a strong contender

picking Gore as VP actually added a boost for Clinton who was considered a bit of a lightweight.

Earth in the Balance came out when it did because he wasn't tied down with a Presidential campaign (average length 2+ years, full time)

Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit (ISBN 0-452-26935-0, paperback ISBN 1-85383-743-1) is a 1992 book written by Al Gore, published in June 1992, shortly before he was elected Vice President in the 1992 presidential election. Known by the short title Earth in the Balance, the book explains the world's ecological predicament and describes a range of policies to deal with the most pressing problems. It includes a proposed "Global Marshall Plan" to address current ecological issues.

Written while his son was recovering from a serious accident,...

Al Gore will be 68 in 2016, one year younger than Reagan when he got it in 1980. Not impossible, but not likely either.
