WI Powell in Thatcher Cabinet?

WI he was in Cabinet. I know having a mix of Goldwater and Wallace with unallayed foreign policy primitivism is not great, as is having an independent minister in the Iron Lady's Cabinet .

Well the Ulster Unionist Party would certainly be chuffed, having 'one of theirs' in the cabinet!

This would likely mean a more confused policy from the British government towards Northern Ireland, and given what Thatcher decided OTL, Enoch would probably end up kicking up a stink and resigning or pushed out. Example: The Anglo-Irish Agreement.

Total ASB. Not only was Powell a member of another party at this point, not only had he told voters to back Labour in '74 against his former party, but nobody in the senior echelons of the party trusted him after 'Rivers of Blood'.

Thatcher would not be as politically clumsy to even consider this, nor would the Cabinet accept it if she did. After '74, Powell was never going to return from the wilderness.

Im sure thay did but just knew it wouldnt be healthy for their careers to admit it.

I think you're confusing trust with agreement, but regardless, Powell was a bull in a china shop, his Tory views had little to do with Party hence his various resignations, moving to the UUP and his career killing endorsement of Labour in 1974 (by that point he didn't really care TBH).

Regardless of all that, say Rivers of Blood never happens or gets a more muted response, Powell in a Thatcher Cabinet would be the defining example of internal friction in British politics. Despite being one of the pioneers of monetarism in Britain, Powell didn't look on 1980s Britain with much enthusiasm. Someone told him he was the inspiration for Thatcher's economic revolution and he responded along the lines of "pity she didn't actually listen to what I said".

Please do write a TL, because Thatcher will be begging for a Miner's Strike by the time Powell has done imploding the Cabinet.

Maybe a Tory led coalition with the UUP with Powell in the cabinet, because he might just be acceptable to both parties? Obviously a junior ministerial posting or something meaningless. Maybe, a coalition of convenience with Powell hyping the need for it up? However Thatch would drop him lack a sack of shit as soon as she could..
