Let's bump this. A Cuomo campaign would encounter fierce opposition from the Catholic prelates. In 1985(?), Cuomo addressed Notre Dame with his version of "personally opposed to abortion". The resultant clerical angst would likely push the Church to oppose him.
While the Catholic prelates aren't politicians and the Church is disestablished, they do wield some political influence (viz. recent health care debates). Cuomo would have to do very well in New Jersey, New York, and New England in order to win. This combined region is heavily Catholic and also contains some of the deepest blue areas. Cuomo would probably win these areas anyway, but not without confrontations with Catholicism and pressure from conservative and/or pro-life religious groups. I'd expect the abortion statement controversy to explode if evangelical leaders join with the Church in denouncing Cuomo's abortion views. Also, there's the sad but real presence of prejudice against an ethnic and Catholic president in some parts of the country.
