WI: Possible Division of Spain due to War of the Spanish Succession

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the Crown lands of Aragon supported Archduke Carlos as the next King of Spain. Would it have been possible, had the Grand Alliance did somewhat better than OTL, would've forced a division between Bourbon Spain and Hapsburg Aragon, or alternatively, the formation of an independent Catalan State?

Highly unlikely

Neither prince was going to be appeased with half of the country the sought after. Either way, once Leopold dies, Charlie is the Holy roman Empire, which is a big no-no if you want to gain other crownlands; IOTL, this was one of the reasons England & The UP sought peace: No one wants Spain to be added to Germany's crown. Same with Phillip, but even moreso: Everyone knew that things would be bad if France added former superpower Spain to their chain of allies.

I did a mini TL once where after the Treaty of Utrecht but before the Treaties of Rastatt & Baden, Philip V was assassinated on his way from France to Madrid by Catalan/Aragonese loyalists. He becomes a national hero in France as a result because he jumped in front of a pistol aimed for his wife, however his death revives hostilities with Charles VI dragging Britain and the UP back in after promising to split the realms on his death (the Habsburgs argued that now Charles VI was the only heir of Charles II period because the other French heirs had renounced their claims, dubious as that is). Eventually the French concede, and Charles gains both thrones passing the Imperial titles (including Milan) and the Burgundian inheritance to Maria Theresa and her husband, and the Spanish to Maria Anna and her husband. Ultimately because I didn't butterfly Habsburg initially blood lines, Maria Anna and Charles Alexander have no direct heirs, both their wills (and the general consent of the Great Power who all don't want another War of Spanish Succession) stipulate Prince Benedetto, Duke of Chablais inherit the throne (he however does has heirs ITTL and ultimately founds an influential dynasty the House of Chablais). I can try to find the map, though it was of said world in like 1910).

Are you certain that no party would've been able to gain a compromise? Perhaps passing the claim (once Charles became HRE) to one of his children, one who would continue that line, and thus perhaps continue the war in hopes of getting a more favorable peace? Or would all that be ASB?

well it wasnt that they were worried about france and spain allieing, it was they didnt want it to be unifyed...philip was heir to france as well, so if he had won, he wouldve inherited both countries...one fo the reasons why as part of the treaty, the spainiash bourbons had to give up claims to france

i tthink that really the otl end is the mot pratical...with perhaps a few more territorial concessions in the former spainish empire to britian and the netherlands, but honestly dont see much difference

Not... exactly. Philip was a POTENTIAL heir, and his grandfather was quite willing to have give that up to get his grandson the Spanish throne. That said, this being Louis XIV we're talking about, everyone was nervous that once Philip was on it, the Sun King would turn around and say 'On second thought, he's in the line of succession after all.' (Also, Louis had backed out of an agreement to divy up Spain's territories between Philip and Charles, his reasoning being that the Grand Alliance would probably attack him no matter what he did, so he might as well try to grab the whole shebang.)
