WI: Portuguese victory at Alcácer Quibir

Portugal gets to control more of coastal Morocco and keeps a friendly/puppet sultan of Morocco for a while.

If Sebastian dies victorious in battle, Spanish troops will still march in but with a more bitter resistance, considering the nobility isn't ruined and won't therefore pick the Spanish side en masse.

The wildcard here is Sebastian. If he lives, such a spectacular victory will only feed his delusional ideas about being the commander-in-chief of God's army so he'll probably do another stunt. The best Portugal can hope for is that he does that next suicide mission after... you know, HAVING A GODDMAMN HEIR!

But let's remember that the mission that culminated on Alcácer-Quibir was anything but impulsive. It was the king's whim, yes, but he didn't just t wake up one day and set sail for Morocco. There's time to assimilate the victory and go for the next adventure, it's what I'm saying. He can marry in between.

Apparently Philip II was planning to marry his dauther Isabella to Sebastian, but left the decision to be made after the war. If he comes back from Morocco, he probably would have a bride.

That would arguably lead to a significantly smoother Iberian Union.

I'm not so sure. By the time of the Battle of Ksar el Kebir Philip II had three living sons. Of course, two of them died as infants, but one lived to be Philip III of Spain. So an Iberian Union wouldn't be certain.

Oh goody, so the inbreeding fest would carry on. :p

Well , this is one tread that should be developed .To see Portugal controlling Marrocos ,and the rest of the north Africa, and the Christianization of the North Africa , the conquest of Egypt , the union with ethiopia a Christian Kingdom, and the start of a new empire where all are considered Portugueses , Accepting jews and other immigrants , forming a Portuguese Church , independent of Rome , colonizing other territories , forming a massive empire , that by the XX century will become the Portuguese Union . when WWII happens the massive armies of the Portuguese union will be essential to the defeat of the III Reich , and the Japanese empire in the Pacific war. :)

Is this you, Sebastian? I knew you'd return! We're waiting for instructions...

Well, our dear cousins "D'Além mar" wouldn't enter in war against the Dutch, so, no Dutch invasion of Brazilian Northeast, John Maurice of Nassau would remain in Netherlands...

Maybe the Brazilian monopoly of Sugar could endure for a few more decades, the Northeast could be a much prosperous region.

Sebastian, you're a fool!

But the butterfly effect would show sometime. Especially the 20th century. Portugal controlling and Christianizing North Africa, possible, BUT NOT Libya, Tunisia or Egypt. The butterflies show up without the Portuguese restoration, as the Iberian Union wouldn't take place. The Netherlands might not exist and would the Netherlands still take Portuguese colonies [because, while Catholic, Portugal was British friendly]? And the War of Spanish succession comes up as well. This might butterfly part of the British Empire away. And, does the German Anglo naval arms race still happen per otl, assuming Germany would still be otl form? And, what about WW1? Then, no WW2, not as we know it.
And, independent of Rome or not, Portugal probably won't tolerate :( non Catholics. And Portugal would replace Britain as colonizer of many countries?
And I forgot Napoleon.

Any chance of Thomas Stuckley maybe actually fulfilling his original contract and landing in Kerry to back the Desmond Rebellion? Or will the Elizabethan adventurer manage to convince Sebastian to aid his co-religionists in Ireland?
