WI: Portuguese Colonization of Japan

So, we all know that the first Europeans to contact the Japanese were the Portuguese in search of trade. The high amounts of nationalism may seem like a turn off for any kind of colonization, but leaders of the world tend to not make the wisest decisions. Anyway, the Europeans were quite fond of Japan's precious surface metals, because large-scale deep-mining was impossible before Industrial times.

I don't want this discussion to be about whether or not they would colonize Japan, but how they could take over the islands.

Thoughts?

When are we talking about this occurring? Before or after its reunification, I mean.

The year is around 1590, so I believe that is before the unification under the Tokugawa Shogunate.

EDIT: Actually, I'd rather have it twenty years prior to 1590, because by then Oda's forces would probably be a pain in the neck.

How does this go down? There weren't that many Portuguese around, and we're talking about a country with thousands of soldiers who were well trained with firearms.
