A more successful pork industry.

The surname 'Porkman', or variations thereof, would probably be more popular.

Prohibitions on eating pork may be a "primitive" counter-measure during pre-bacteria knowledge because of diseases incurring on peoples eating it and getting salmonella, listeria, campylobactor or trichura tichurasis...
You'd probably need early refrigerating and knowledge of handling raw pork properly to effectuate this. The Mideastern climate isn't a help in this respect.
There's a reason to the close to hysteria veterinarian precautions in handling pork.;)

Yes and no. You could just have different cooking/handling regimens as a religious thing. Also, epidemics of cholera didn't stop people from throwing their shit out the front door until the 19thc.

If they become a partial replacement for sheep in the ME might they halt or slow the desertification? Pigs are a forest animal and require both water and shade to prosper, but they will eat anything so could be fed from trash around cities and scrub in the desert (if you have water and shade). Sheep are notorious for creating desert by eating the range right down to bare ground, but need much less water and practically no shade at all.

In all fairness, cholera was mainly limited to India until the 19thc.

I have heard two different theories on the prohibition of pork. The first one I actually heard from a rabbi, who explained that the wild pig is carnivorous, and therefore the prohibition against eating any beast of prey.
The second theory is about the cult of the Eqyptian god Seth, the god of darkness and chaos, who was normally depicted with the head of an unknown animal, possibly an aardvark, but also sometimes with a pig's head. Pigs were usually sacrificed and eaten during his ceremonies. When the Jews left Eqypt, Seth's name evolved to Satan, and the consumption of pork was associated with his worship.

Genitically Modifed Pigs that chew their cud.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was the Turtledove story with this premise. I think the conclusion was that if such an animal existed, it would indeed be kosher, since pigs are not specifically outlawed, but don't chew cud, so are forbidden.

No pig is carnivorous. Pigs are omnivorous and will scavenge or eat creatures that fall to them but are not beasts of prey because they do not hunt. Their main food is acorns.

I thought Satan came from Ha-Shaitan, Hebrew for 'the Opposer', though could be that came from Seth too. One theory I've read is that ALL of our gods came from the Egyptians, who themselves came from some sort of ur-Gods which were worshiped by everybody back when worship itself started. (sort of like the original language every other one is supposed to come from.)

there's a difference in observing cause and affect here... with eating bad pork, it's simple: those who ate pork sometimes came down with certain diseases, and those who didn't, didn't. But equating cholera (or any disease) with dung and microscopic bacteria isn't so easy to observe....
