WI Pope Leo III was permanently deposed in 799 AD?

In 799 Roman Nobles accused Pope Leo III of perjury and adultery... In April of the same year a gang attacked him while officiating at St. Peter's Basilica attempting to blind him and cut off his tongue (original plan was to murder him)... Leo III was captured and Roman Nobility proclaimed him deposed and sent him off to a Monastery... However he escaped and called Charlemagne for help... Charlemagne granted him royal protection and escorted him back to Rome where Leo III was reinstated as Pope...
Leo III as an act of gratitude for saving his life crowned him as Emperor in 25 December 800...
WI Leo III was murdered in that day as the Roman Nobility had planned?
In my point of view one thing is for sure... NO Holy Roman Empire...
Any thoughts?

The reason Leo III backed Charlemagne was because the Papacy needed support, against the Lombards, IIRC. So even if the Pope is killed, the Papacy's problem isn't solved — the next Pope might still crown Charlemagne because, apparently, the Franks would back up the Papacy.

If Irene wasnt Empress Regnant in Byzantine Empire i guess that the Pope succeding the deposed Leo III would have turned to Byzantium... At least Byzantine Emperors had a clear claim on Roman inheritance...
