WI Rome were destroyed in November 82?
The City of Rome was indefensible. From 88 BC to 408, Rome never withstood a prolonged siege. Sulla took the Servian walls at march in 88 BC, and again when he returned. Caesar marched at the city unopposed after Rubicon. Octavian did the same when he mutinies in August 43. Et cetera in the Year of Four Emperors. When someone approached Rome, those at Rome marched out to fight battle before the city or fled. No one stood to defend the walls and gates, except Octavius in 87 against Cinna and Marius - and he soon lost.
The battle of Colline Gate was a close fought thing. Sulla´s wing was crushed and he barely escaped with his life. Crassus, however, bailed him out.
Before the battle, Pontius Telesinus called upon the destruction of Rome itself, to assure the liberty of Italy.
Assume he wins. By the morning of 2nd November, both Sulla and Crassus are dead or captured, their armies are killed, captured or scattered, and the walls of Rome itself have been stormed. The Samnites then set about executing their prisoners and demolishing the physical buildings of the city.
But what will be going on elsewhere?
What are the Roman consuls and their armies doing - Marius under siege in Praeneste, and Carbo where?
Where are the surviving Sullan commanders - Metellus Pius and Pompeius Magnus?
And how will the other Italian allies - the fresh Roman citizens - react? What terms of surrender are they able to offer to the Roman citizen colonies scattered around Italy?
