In 1138 the Testament of Bolesław III Krzywousty divided the Kingdom of Poland into 5 parts; Silesia, Greater Poland, Mazovia, Sandomir and Krakow. The first four were divided among his four sons who became independent rulers, whereas the fifth province, that of Kraków, was to be added to the senior among the Princes. Eventually Poland reformed, with Mazovia finally merging with it in 1526.
But what if the provinces never unified? What if Poland never reformed? How could come about, and who would fill the political void that Poland would eventually fill?
What do you think?
