WI PM Rab Butler?

Rab, the perpetual DPM, lost out twice for the Tory leadership in 1957 and 1963. WI he hadn't? How would the Tory Party develop with him as PM?

Even more staunchly one nationist, TBH I don't know too much on his ideals barr what little if have read Butskellism. Could lead to an earlier Neo-liberal revolution, if the right gets more dissatisfied

Since the reason Rab didn't get anointed by the "Magic Circle" was due to a lack of ruthlessness (or as Powell put it, "given a loaded revolver and refused to use it because it made noise"), I could see an earlier coup. Perhaps a PM Thorneycroft, since Powell is unelectable for obvious reasons?

If Butler became Tory leader and Prime Minister in 1957 his policies would have been similar to Macmillan's. The Tories would still have won the 1959 general election.

If he had become leader in 1963 instead of the Earl of Home, the Tories could have won the 1964 general election by a narrow majority. But Labour would have won the next election most probably within three years.

By all accounts, RAB Butler heavily influenced Prince Charles as a boy growing up - think Charlie if he were PM.
