WI Pierce ran again?

Franklin Pierce had the dubious distinction of being one of the few US presidents whose party did not nominate him to run for a 2nd term, choosing James Buchanan instead. He did, however, come rather close to winning that nomination. WI he did? Would he be reelected or would his unpopularity result in the Republicans under John C Fremont getting the boost they needed to win?
 
Was wondering this recently myself -- though frankly, I don't think Pierce has a chance in hell of getting re-elected, meaning the (quite real) possibility of him getting re-nominated would likely have meant a Republican victory four years earlier...
