In 1964, Antonio Segni asked to the general of Arma dei Carabinieri Giovanni de Lorenzo to draft up a plan for a coup, in case of election of Aldo Moro. The plan, drafted with the help of the chief of CIA's station in Rome, planned to have the carabinieri occupy major media outlets, suppress/neutralize the Socialist and Communist Parties by occupying their headquarters, and deport around 730 people to Capo Marragiu, one of Gladio's bases and amongst the hardesst places to reach in Italy. However, the plan was never put into practice, at first because Aldo Moro did not push as hard as he could have for his re-election, and afterwards due to the fact Segni suffered of a stroke during a debate, leading to his retirement and the election of Saragat, who was far more lenient towards the Left, leading to a loosening on the plan's secrecy, until in 1967, its existence was revealed to the public.
But what would have happened, had this plan been carried out? Surely it would have been hard to hide Gladio's existence at that point, and somebody was going to figure out what happened. What are the consequences elsehwere?
