The common image many people have of the Eastern Roman Emperor Phokas is that of a tyrant who brutally murdered his predecessor Maurice and his children, one of the worst emperors ever, and that the empire was only saved when Heraclius the Younger had Phokas overthrown and executed and defeated the Persians.

But, AFAIK, the only major sources of Phokas' rule come from during or after Heraclius' reign. I might be wrong, but I think the Persians only made major advances into Anatolia, Syria, Palestine and Egypt during when the civil war between Heraclius and Phokas occurred.

While I don't condone Phokas' killing of Maurice and his family, I am curious as to how his reign with Heraclius' rebellion would have continued/ended.
