WI: Philip II of Spain marries Jeanne D'Albret

Jeanne was born in the palace of the royal court at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France[3][4] at five o'clock in the afternoon on 16 November 1528,[5][6] the daughter of Marguerite of Angoulême and King Henry II of Navarre. Her mother, the daughter of Louise of Savoy and Charles, Count of Angoulême, was the sister of King Francis I of France. The birth was officially announced the following 7 January when King Francis gave his permission for the addition of a new master in all cities where there were incorporated guilds "in honour of the birth of Jeanne de Navarre, the king's niece".[7] Since the age of two, as was the will of her uncle King Francis who took over her education, Jeanne was raised in the Château de Plessis-lèz-Tours in the Loire Valley (Touraine), thus living apart from her parents. She received an excellent education under the tutelage of humanist Nicolas Bourbon.[8]

Described as a "frivolous and high-spirited princess", she also, at an early age, displayed a tendency to be both stubborn and unyielding.[9] Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, offered to have her married to his son and heir, Philip, to settle the status of the Kingdom of Navarre.

Well the only time I could see such a marriage being successful is if its part of the Treaty of Crepy. But Charles has just renounced claims to the territory in France, namely the Duchy of Burgundy, so would Francis really consent to a marriage that would see Charles' heir inherit the Albret lands in southern France? I suppose it could work if Jeanne's uncle Charles d'Albret survived. Then the Albret lands could pass to Jeanne's uncle or cousin through the male line while Navarre itself passes to the Habsburgs jure uxoris when she marries Philip. Lower Navarre is such a small territory that the shift wouldn't make too much of a difference from geo-political perspective it just recognizes the fait accompli of the Spanish annexation of Navarre.

Assuming the territorial issues are somehow addressed it would still probably be a tempestuous marriage. Jeanne was by all accounts stubborn and strong willed with early protestant leanings inherited from her mother and Philip was conservative and devoutly Catholic. So it almost seems like its headed for eventual annulment. Certainly if they do manage to have a child I expect they separate as soon as a son and heir is born. If they consumate the marriage then I suppose Philip is stuck until she dies, which wouldn't be long after his OTL second wife's death. At that point he either marries his OTL third wife or maybe her younger sister the Archduchess Elisabeth or, interestingly Margaret of Valois who'd be the right age.

I'm not sure that Jeanne would have much influence as Queen of Spain. Maybe, just maybe she could moderate Philip's reaction in the Netherlands but I just can't see Philip giving her much of a political role or heading her advice. It could certainly affect the succession long term if they have a son who becomes King.

The affects are probably felt more immediately on the French side. Antoine de Bourbon marries someone else, obviously, and probably remains Catholic. So the senior Bourbon line, heirs to the throne should the Valois line still fail remain Catholic which completely changes the dynamic of the French Wars of Religion. No marriage between protestant Henry of Navarre and Catholic Margaret of Valois means no St Bartholomew's Day Massacre. So different leadership on the protestant side, perhaps less radicalization of the conflict without the massacre to enrage the Protestants and the spectre of a protestant King to scare the Catholics.
