WI: Permanent Schism

I'm looking into doing a TL, where the western schism becomes a permanent fixture in Europe, with countries backing either Avignon or Rome.

What would the effects of this be?

Will there be crusades called against the other faction? Will Protestantism arise, or is there a possibility of one or both factions accepting reform? Will the Hussites survive with a less coordinated response?

Also what is the best and most interesting POD to bring about this situation? I've been particularly interested in the Pisan pope, could we have a three-way schism?

Any thoughts?

More schisms. Once it becomes established and accepted, I can see the various states creating their own national churches and setting up their own popes.

The national popes could be used to provide religious support for political wars.

This could actually restrict reform as each individual pope is beholden to his political supporters.

No (at least not any more than in OTL). They were very much a political threat OTL. This does not change in ATL. You could see concessions to the Calixtines or surviving *Moravians, but there will not be a Hussite state as a direct result of the POD.

Have the Council of Constance fail to secure the resignation of the contenders. Since the bishops voted in national blocs, you could probably have the council split on a political issue (Polish-Teutonic wars?). What ever happens in the council, I would ask that you still have Sigismund assert 'I am King of the Romans and above grammar'
