WI penicillin discovered in late 1700s?

Assume some quack tries adding a weird mold he found to his "medicine". The people who buy the batch are healed, and it comes to (insert 18th century famous doctor)'s notice.
What happens?

It was a folk cure for a long, long time (applying moldy bread to wounds) before doctors in the 17th and 18th century stopped it. It won't become popular without a theoretical basis - physicians are really not fond of "honestly, we have no idea why this works sometimes, but keep doing it."

What you want or need is the germ theory of disease before antibiotics will be taken seriously by anyone. Fortunately, the germ theory of disease being developed doesn't seem too implausible to me - Hooke looked at all manner of stuff under a microscope, having him compare healthy tissue/diseased tissue/diseased tissue with mold and draw conclusions doesn't seem ASB to me.
