In OTL the colonial Governor of Virginia, William Berkeley, invited Charles II to Virginia. Suppose the king decides to move his court to Jamestown. For decades he reigns over the loyal Chesapeake, which becomes a haven for Catholics, Quakers, and other religious dissenters, as well as Frenchmen and Spaniards. In the meantime he fails to keep abreast of developments in England. Over the years, "Chesapeake Charlie" loses favor in England. Prominent Anglicans and moderate parliamentarians switch their loyalty to Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg. After the death of Cromwell, Frederick enters England in glory, and is named king by parliament. Charles insists on his divine right to the throne, and retains the loyalty of Virginians and Marylanders. What are the odds that his descendants, with French and Spanish support, can hold onto the Chesapeake region and continue to rule it as an independent kingdom?
