WI: Pat Tillman Doesn't Die in Afghanistan?

Famous for ending his football career to serve in the Middle East, Pat Tillman was a critic of the war and the handling of it. He was also close with Noam Chomsky and some speculated that he intended to run for political office when he finished his service in the Middle East. What if he hadn't died in Afganistan in 2004 and did inevitably run for political office?

If he subscribed to the same overall political views as Chomsky, he'd be red-baited to political oblivion. It would be like Swift Boat X10.

Maybe if he hooked up with the Ron Paul wing of the antiwar movement, he might have an easier time of it. Right-wing peaceniks tend to get cut a little more slack than their counterparts on the left. Even then, though, how many atheists have ever been elected to higher office in the USA? (Question only partly rhetorical)
