WI: Pat Brown ran in 1970

Pat Brown lost to Ronald Reagan in 1966, after reneging on his pledge not to seek a third term. Brown almost ran again in 1970, but was convinced not to by his wife, as it may have interfered with Jerry Brown's political career. What if Brown ran in 1970?

Reagan would defeat him fairly easily, though not as overwhelmingly as in 1966. In 1970, Reagan was still pretty popular in California; he defeated Unruh by almost eight points. (By 1974, Reagan, had he run for a third term, might have been vulnerable, but by them it was time for a younger Brown...)

FWIW, a Field Poll in early 1970 showed that Brown would not do substantially better against Reagan than Unruh would. http://ucdata.berkeley.edu/pubs/CalPolls/654.pdf The poll overstated Reagan's eventual margin of victory but there is to reason to think it overstated it more for Brown than for Unruh. For all Brown's accomplishments, many Californians still had negative perceptions of him.
