WI: Paris Commune spread to become Revolution?

Hey Guys,

I'm curious, in France after the Franco-Prussian War there was a communist takeover of Paris for a short time - as well as in a few other towns and cities in France. These communes failed rather rapidly and so the Communist takeover of France never occured.

However, what would it take for a Communist revolt to occur nationwide? Could it have potentially succeeded? If so how would nations around France have reacted to a 'Second French Revolution', especially Germany and Britain?

Considering that the majority of France was so royalist that the Third Republic only came about because they couldn't agree on who to enthrone, and they framed the office of President explicitly so as to make it easy for him to launch a coup... no, you'd need huge changes in the public's mindset.

Exactly. Paris =/= France. As much as Parisians keep forgetting that.

Oh. And 'communard' =/= 'communist'.

ASB. There was virtually no support for the Paris Commune outside the city itself. The Paris Commune is one of the most overrated events in European history.
