In the 1950's there were very serious discussions on Pakistan and Afghanistan joining together on a Confederation. The negotiators had even agreed on a framework for the it, the Crown of Pakistan (Pak was a dominion at the time) would be offered to Zahir Shah, and he would accept. There would be a combined gov incharge of defense, foreign affairs and communications, while the pre-existing states governments would continue to be responsible for all other subjects.
Ayub Khans coup put paid to any idea of that occuring. Despite being a Pashtun (or perhaps because of being one) Ayub was dead againt the idea and it never came to pass.
What if it did? Would butterfly away many events which affect us today? Soviet invasion of Afghanistan; no Taliban; no Al Qaeda. Perhaps no Iranian revolution either?
