WI: Paddy Ashdown killed in November 1995?

Gone Fishin'
On 27th of November, 1995, Paddy Ashdown, Leader of the Liberal Democrats 1988-1999, was attacked whilst touring his Constituency with the local Vicar following a racially motivated firebombing of a local restaurant. Taunted and heckled by a group whilst walking with the Vicar, Ashdown invited one of the men to join him and the Vicar on their walk. The man then pulled a knife, which he held to Ashdown's throat.

What if the man wielding the knife stabbed Ashdown in the neck and killed him?

EDIT: To rephrase, what would have happened as a result of Ashdown's death, both in the Liberal Democrats and Britain as a whole? His Deputy at the time was Alan Beith, but who would have been likely to succeed him in the Leadership election?

Another LibDem gets elected from that seat, or maybe a Labour MP in 1997. Charlie Kennedy becomes leader early, but nothing besides that.
