WI: Oveta Culp Hobby agree to run for presidency in 1960

Oveta was the first woman who was considered for a United States presidential candidacy by an incumbent United States President, been encouraged by Eisenhower to run for president in 1960, but she did not run. What if she accept and run for presidency as the republican nominatee? Could she won the election against Kennedy? How would be the effects of this decision even if she didnt win?

I don't think Eisenhower seriously thought she could get the nomination. He suggested she might run as a "favorite son" (or actually daughter):

If she did try to run, she would have gotten nowhere. The convention was determined to nominate Nixon.

here's one other problem she'd face:
“ . . manufactured by the California-based family firm of Cutter Laboratories, had caused 40 000 cases of polio, leaving 200 children with varying degrees of paralysis and killing 10. . ”

Oveta and at least one other federal official resigned. Maybe even though they weren’t a hundred percent to blame, more than they didn’t do everything possible to prevent this tragedy. And this method of taking responsibility in real terms, not just verbal terms, I find refreshing.

All the same, have to get lucky.

You’ve got to prevent this tragedy, even purely good luck, or some combo of being extremely proactive and on-the-ball and some degree of good luck.

So, Oveta gets some buzz as a “favorite daughter” candidate in 1960. She later runs for Texas Governor and then Senator. Why the hell not! 🦋
