The Ottoman empire seized Otranto in 1480, but this was aborted due to the death of Mehmed II; later Sultans did not take an interest in Italy. One potential POD is Mehmed II living longer, resulting in him being able to devote more resources to the invasion after the initial assault. Would the Ottomans be able to take Rome, as many feared after the fall of Otranto to them? How would this affect the culture of the region if Ottoman rule proved to be lengthy?
