The Ottoman Empire of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is commonly associated with a narrative of decline and backwardness. But was the Empire really the 'sick man of Europe' by 1914, without any potential for modernisation? Without the First World War, what are the potential consequences for:

1) Ottoman modernisation (considering the CUP reforms under Mehmed)
2) Arab nationalism (without the First World War, would we really see revolutionary movements, or just pressure for greater decentralisation? Would Islam still provide sufficient unity for the empire?)
