WI: Ottoman Empire inherited by Crimean Khans?

I can't remember where exactly, or which Ottoman sultan it referred to, but I read somewhere that if the sultan died without male issue, the throne would pass to the Crimean Khan. What effects would there be if that happened?

The Ottoman Empire Monarchy did'nt really work like other Monarchies, rather most of the time instead of the throne going to next in line, it went to whomever in the family had enough support and won the battles (both figuratively and literally, several Ottoman Sultans killed quite a few relatives to get the throne) now there was a Crimean branch of the Ottoman family, but to get the throne they'd have to compete against all the other members.

Plus its rather unlikely that the Sultan would die without a male heir. The harem system, whatever else can be said about it, was rather effective at ensuring there were always plenty of spares.

The sultans also tended to kill off their brothers; at one point the line dwindled to just one individual; I believe it as this point that the possibility of the House of Giray taking over the throne was mulled over.

Actually--that nearly happened.

Twice.

A combination of bad health and the Osmani tendency to tie off loose branches really played havoc on things for them, especially in the post-Cage days...

Drake Rlugia's The Prince of Peace had that occur.

Indeed, it does. It was essentially an informal promise that Giray's, being of Ghengisid blood, would become the Sultans if the line dies out.

THe TL is on hiatus, but you can read it, it's in the later parts of the TL. Unfortunately the TL was on my harddrive and died. Thankfully I hadn't updated in awhile, so I must just copy and paste everything back into a document, but it'll take some time. I'm also planning a new TL in the mean time, but I definitely intend to keep working on the PoP.

My TL does not have the transfer go easy: it was after all an informal agreement and the empire sort of dissentegrates into Warlordism until the Giray Khan restores order (and gaining some legitimacy by marrying the last Sultan's only child, a daughter).

The crux would be whether the political elite would want to accept a new dynasty placing itself over them, or whether they would try for their own powerbases. A theoretical Grand Vizier could try to do a Yuan Shih'kai and create a new dynasty through might. Others would back the Giray for stability. Quite where the allegiance of the Jannissaries would lie is interesting. And of course the beys governing the provinces could decide to do a Janina and declare that as the Osmanli are dead they are de facto independent.
