WI- Operation Torch A Faliure

Is there a way for Operation Torch to be a complete faliure, and what affect would it make on the North African Front.

Umm 1 way is to give the Vichy French superpowers....wait you wanted non-ASB. Ummm, magically summon Rommel and his Afrika Corps there? Wait no thats ASB too. Dammit.

:p

It's more or less impossible for Operation Torch to not be at least partially successful.

If it did fail however, heads would roll in America, Churchill might face a vote of no-confidence and the battle for North Africa isnt over until Early 1943.

Torch came at a time of maximum strategic German committment at Alemein and Stalingrad... its not like they truly had any strategic reserves to do anything about it. The only major reserve units the German's hadn't commited at around that time were 6th panzer, 10th panzer and the Leibstandarte (still training on new weapons) plus some paratroopers. The Germans sent some forces to Tunisia to hold the bridge head and the rest to try to break the kessel at Stalingrad an ended up not having enough strength anywhere. The allies were stupid at torch to turn down Chruchill's suggestion of just landing at Tunis and Bizertte to cut off Rommel and end the campaing in Africa right then and there.

Although if it was a quick defeat the additional transport and the 10th panzer might help Manstein get to Stalingrad

I hate to repeat a common stereotype, but the Vichy French forces at the invasion zone were simply not of the same quality as Rommel's Afrika Korps. It should be noted that several Allied commanders praised the bravery and gallantry of the Vichy French troops there.

Now, if there was some sort of intelligence leak and a German armored division or two happened to be there, things might have gone differently.
