WI: Operation Gothic Serpent successful?

Assume that the Battle of Mogadishu resulted in an American victory, executed without a hitch, thus not prompting American troops to depart. What if the UN/American intervention in Somalia in 1993 had succeeded in capturing Muhammad Farah Aidid? How would this change the conflict in Somalia, and affect American policy afterwards, especially in regard to Africa?

Another gang of guerillas, organized criminals, freedom fighters, etc. would fill the power gap.
Somalians would never agree to an American-style economy, because the Somli economy was based on clan affiliations.

It's possible that some progress could be made in Somalia towards governance. That's what has happened in recent years with the AU backed govt. in Mogadisu gradually expanding its zone of control

The US/UN had reached working accommodations with most of the warlords & clan leaders. Eastern Somali was well stabilized. There were two problems with Adid. 1. He felt he deserved a large cut from the food distribution, or greater direct control of it. Second, the head of the UN at the moment, Butros Gali (sp?) was a long time enemy of Adid. Butros had some influence over Clinton in questions of Africa & eventually persuaded him Adid had to go.

Absent Adid as a active disruption & target the issues of aid distribution in the Mogidishu region are resolved, the UN/US congratulates itself, and the soldiers gradually fade away.
