WI: OJ Simpson Murders Take Place Ten Years Later

Without the Rodney King verdict being so soon, and very likely a much more competent Prosecuter on the job, OJ goes to jail.

Also, without the prescedent, Michael Jackson may be up shits creek.

Michael Jackson didn't do anything. Look into that father, because he is the one that brought the lawsuit. Carrie Fisher wrote about him, and you can find other information about his oddness although you have to sift through tabloid bias and the "Michael Jackson and OJ are both innocent" camps. He was not even the primary custody holder of his son for good reason, and he was a creep and nut job who said in a recorded phone call that he was only doing this for Jackson's money. Jackson was convicted by the media based on nothing more than looking different and having had a bad childhood and becoming something of a generous and eccentric Willy Wonka as a result, and because gossip and slander sells newspapers and TV time. The lawsuit fell apart because of paper thin evidence and because Jackson had such strong character witnesses that he was not a pederast. Jackson had some personal psychological drama and did things that are inappropriate because they could be sexual, like sleeping in the same bed. But they were not sexual, Jackson was on the level, and Jackson was not guilty.

That is the unfortunate thing about celebrity and fame. There is rarely a journalistic coverage of these people. Even the journalists are rarely journalistic and unbiased. It's a middle/working class game of gossip, stories without evidence, stories that are misreported, half truths, untruths and slander crafted around an invented narrative. There's more foregone conclusions and a game of Chinese whispers than citation and evidence. That's why pop culture timelines can be hard. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

One possible effect of moving the murders to 2004, is that it would put them during the early stages of research into CTE. You might have the prosecution bringing it up as a motive, or if a conviction seemed likely, the defense bringing it up as a mitigating factor.

Getting away from the trial itself, the discussion of DNA evidence is often credited with helping popularize the idea of DNA and DNA evidence in the public mind. It was obviously known long before then, but the centrality of DNA to the trial made it much more prominent in the public imagination.

Otherwise it's mostly going to be associated with genetic engineering a la Jurassic Park until things like cloning come into being, which might affect popular culture.

Speaking of the media, any OJ trial would involve the brand-new social media, twittering, and Youtube, among other things.

During this time period, the public is much more informed of what DNA is and how it works. Just by the fact that Simpson's DNA and that of the victims was found at the murder scene, in his vehicle, and home is enough by itself to convict him. There is much less racial tension in the Los Angeles area as well.
