While making some thoughs about a TL I may write sometime, I came upon this possible POD.
In 1174, zangid Nur ad-Din was ruler over Syria and was preparing for a War against a rebellious General - Saladin, after defeating the Fatimids the new Sultan of Egypt.
But before it came to a single battle, Nur ad-Din died. Different sources say he died due to an mistreated illness, a Heart attack or an assassination attempt. He left only his eleven year old son as an heir. Thus Saladin had an easy time taking control over Syria too, leading to the conquering of Jerusalem and other crusader states and further leading to the third crusade.
Now my questions is, what do you think would happen if Nur ad-Din doesn't die but rallys his army and marches unto egypt?
Is this a way to keep Syria and Egypt seperate? I think this would influence the whole of europe and the middle east. Would Jerusalem be conquered? If not, Barbarossa would not die William II of Sicily neither. What would be the consequences?
