WI: Number One from Captain America Vol 1 #175 is outright stated to be Nixon.

In Captain America Vol 1 #175, Steve Rogers finds out the identity of the head of the Secret Empire, Number One. It is heavily implied that this man is Richard Nixon but never outright said. What if it explicitly revealed in that issue to be Nixon? How does this affect Marvel and the comic book industry?

I think this may sink Nixon's approval rating even lower. If this affects his resignation, then that can cause a change with Gerald Ford.

The comic did come out just before he resigned, it shouldn't make too much of a difference though. However, this will affect Captain America's cultural impact in ways I don't know myself.

If it greatly increases sales numbers maybe it will lead to an earlier end to the Comics Code and cause both Marvel and DC to be more topical with their stories.

I don't know enough about the comics industry to give a definitive answer, but perhaps the Captain America comics begin taking on a tone of defeating domestic enemies in America rather than the usual secret foreign cabals?

So we might get plots about plots about the Church Committee and the Patriot Act. With Steve defending the investigators and finding out whos really behind the Patriot Act respectively. (That is if these aren't butterflied away) Hell if the butterflies allow it, we might get a socialist Steve Rogers

I don't think Marvel would ever go so far to explicitly say what the political ideology of Captain America is, but I can see him beating up Klansmen and Birchers who are trying to assassinate Frank Church, or something along those lines.

Shortly after that comic came out, Saturday Morning TV had Gerald Ford giving orders to the Justice League. Guess the long national nightmare truly was over.

Something i just thought of is that if this increases sales significantly, this could influence the time Marvel nearly bought DC. Also if the butterflies do not affect politics, we could get a storyline about Iran-Contra

Do you think if Marvel had bought DC they would have kept the 'universes' separate but with more common crossovers, or do you think they would have merged them together? Maybe Marvel becomes the 'realistic' superhero universe where they address political issues like Iran-Contra and Watergate, while DC becomes the more fantastical campy superhero universe.

I think the former with some dc characters becoming part of marvel and vise versa.

Someone, (I'm guessing Patricia Pulling) will try to snap Frederic Wertham out of his posi-1972 funk, and either collaborate with him or outright ghostwrite "Seduced Again!" (The exclamation point is for both the title and sentence.)

In the Eighties Rupert Murdoch will buy out Marvel Comics, with Reagan's blessing, and fire everyone there except Steve Ditko, Bill Sinkiewicz, and possibly Rob Liefield, Jim Lee, Erik Larson, and Jim Valentino.

At the very least, too many people in the emerging Conservative Movement will hate Marvel for no one to at least try to pull something like that.

Would Marvel even have financial troubles?

We could also get more allegories pther then x-men. For example, Batman and Dare Devil; what leads to inner city crime and justice not always being blind, iron man; military industrial complex. Captain america; executive branch corruption, wonder woman; gender politics.

I really can't imagine it making much of a difference. It probably gets retconned out the next time there's a change in editors.
Maybe there's a conservative backlash.

This was at the end of the period whereMarvel Comic where in ‘real time’ - it might kick start the movement to keep Marvel and its characters linked to real time and events.

IOTL they are going to have to do something about Magneto's backstory sooner or later so they could say Nixon drank a magic potion that kept him young
