WI: Nullification Crisis settled in South Carolina's favor

I read the Arizona banning national health care thread and the Michigan overriding federal gun laws thread and those gave me an idea. What if the Nullification Crisis ended in South Carolina's favor, with them being allowed to nullify the Tarrif of 1828. How would this affect the dynamics of American politics. Would this lead to an opening of the flood gates?

Would this lead to an opening of the flood gates?

This would depend upon how you think of flood waters. There are pros and cons to everything.

Historically, there were and are a lot of political decisions that should have been left to the states to decide. Aside from the usually debated issues, that of slavery, one can recently include abortion and auto emissions - and probably stem cell research.

Aside from the Big Head Line issues there are also the Mandate issues which usually just cost the states money.

Will the nation spin apart from the ability for states to nullify federal laws? Most likely no - pretty much the same as if things had continued under the Articles of Confederation. However, AH wouldn't be as interesting if things pretty much stayed the same.

The United States become less united. Slavery is still around. (No Fugitive Slave Law, either, though...) No Civil War.
Start from there, work out...

Really? I could see slavery's demise being delayed, but I don't think it could have lasted until present day. The US would almost certainly be shunned by the rest of the world if it kept slavery into the 20th Century.

This POD is wildly unlikely, if slightly short of ASB. South Carolina recieved no support for the position in OTL, and even the Confedrate Constitution didn't allow for this.

It means the US government is unable to enforce any coherent national policy and reduces the US congress into a meaningly debating society. US industrial growth will be retarded and it will have minimal international influence.

Of course, I may be being optimistic. Nullification means any state can ignore any law favored by any or all of the other states. Balkanization and petty wars are a likely mid-term result with the long term being several minor countries, many of them client states of more power countries such as Mexico.
