WI: North Korea wins the Korean War

I'm of the opinion that a united Communist Korea would have been either a colder Vietnam or an oriental Cuba in terms of level of repression as opposed to a larger version of the DPRK.

North Koreans were pretty close to having the entire peninsula in their hands, their offensive and its ferocity were entirely ruined basically due to a weak line of logistics. Unlike, the North Vietnamese, the North Koreans didn't have the grand luxury of having supplies extending all over their southern adversaries. Their logistics had to come through by crossing the whole of the North then on to the South, but the trains were constantly being destroyed. The on foot supply runners were more successful at avoiding American planes but they couldn't get enough across in time. I suppose if the North Koreans had the time, they could manage and create a strong defense of the whole country but the time wasn't on their side. It was on America's side luckily.

We all love South Korea. It's where we get our Samsung phones (that blow up when we try to use them) and is a economic powerhouse in Asia.

However, in 1950, South Korea was nearly conquered by North Korea, which blitzkriegged their way through their southern neighbor, capturing Seoul and driving the South Korean government and military leadership to Pusan, literally their last stronghold.

On August 4th, the Americans and the Commonwealth arrived to beat back the North Koreans.

However, they had to do this with the approval of a UN Security Council resolution.

The UN Security Council resolution only succeeded because the Soviet Union was boycotting the United Nations over it's refusal to accept Mao Zedong's government as the legitimate government of China.

But what if the Soviets were there to block the resolution, giving the North Koreans an opportunity to crush their southern counterparts and win the Korean War?

The US had already decided to intervene on the side of the RoK before the UN resolution and had alerted its commander and troops in Japan to be prepared to move on 26 June 1950. US troops engaged DRKPA troops on 5 July. The UN Resolution could have been vetoed by the USSR, but the primary combat and support forces deployed to Korea came from Western nations which had already declared their readiness to confront "Communist" aggression in supporting the Greek government against a "Communist" insurrection, and the Turks and Iranians against Soviet pressure, forcing a Soviet evacuation of northern Iran, forcing the Soviets to lift the Berlin Blockade and the formation of NATO on 4 April 1949. The Truman Administration believed that the DRK's invasion was only the first step of a Soviet manipulated series on events that would lead to invasions of Europe and the Middle East and that firm action was now required. The real question is would Stalin have supplied the weapons and equipment and signed off on the invasion if the Truman Administration had included the RoK in its announced defensive zone?

I had this question last night, after watching something that was on the history channel (back before it was pawn stores, ancient aliens and pickers.) It turns out my Wife's Grandfather was in Korea at the Pusan Perimeter. I had not known that, he was a veteran of WWII and somehow got screwed and sent to Korea.

What if in August of 1950 the Pusan Perimeter had fallen? The Americans that were there had been captured. The ROK that had made it across the Han had been destroyed in place. MacArthur had been forced to hop a plane back to Japan (and for fun we'll take a MASH scenario, he was shot down into the Sea of Japan. Or not he makes it back to Japan, whatever he is done being in command for allowing the perimeter to fall.)

What would America have done? Landing's at Inchon are not possible (plus with Mac being relieved...) Would America attempt to land elsewhere? Would there be a massive bombing campaign to proceed it? I think my most important question is would any of those bombs leave mushroom clouds? Where would we nuke? Why would happen to the American POW? Would we hit China?

I apologize for these elementary questions, but I am not really educated when it comes to the Korean war. For instance, I was not aware that we purposefully denied antitank weapons to the ROK (bet we looked stupid there!), That we thought Korea was not suitable for heavy tanks (as the T-34's rolled by.) And frankly was Rhee a bad guy?

I would be interested I. Hearing @CalBear opinion or anyone's on this. For my personal fun can anyone recommend a good book I could read on what life was like for American troops I. Occupied Germany or Japan right after WWII (not say the 60's).

The North Korean regime would be less psychotic, they wouldn't be able to rant against the South and they'd be less useful to China and the Soviet Union so they wouldn't put up with their crap.
