WI: North Korea Threatens to Use Nuclear Weapons on South As Blackmail

What if North Korea after a time it acquired nuclear weapons detonated a device off the coast of the South in a seemingly offensive move as an intimidation move and bluff to gain desperate economic support? How does this go over?

  • The North already uses nukes as a negotiation device. That's why they test them every so often.
  • The North using nukes in south korea would be a terrible, terrible idea. That brings in the US and North would be royally fucked.

Has anyone used this site before and if so whats their assessment of it?

From the 'about us' section ...

http://en.people.cn/102840/7560415.html

" Introduction to People.cn People.cn, founded on Jan. 1, 1997, is a large-scale information interaction platform constructed by People’s Daily – one of the world’s top ten newspapers. It is also one of the largest comprehensive Internet media on the Internet. As a leading key news website in China, it upholds the belief "authority and strength originate from the people". With "authority, popularity and credibility" as tenet, it takes "multiple languages, all media forms, globalization and full coverage" as objectives, and "disseminating China’s news and covering world news" as its mission. On June 20, 2008, during his inspection tour of People.cn, President Hu Jintao said, "People.cn has played a unique role in advocating the Party's belief, guiding public opinion and warmly serving netizens since inception."

Now, if I was in the cyber-warfare section of the security services of the Chinese government and someone was pretending to be the People's Daily and they were saying stuff like that and they werent the Peoples Daily, then Id probably be grumpy at them. Paperwork may then be involved.

I would imagine the US would put a fleet off the coast and flood SK with planes and troops.

I imagine that Sth K and Japan would build their own nukes on the quiet and then reveal them to the world in a fiat acompli and checkmate Nth Ks threats.

A nuclear detonation off of the coast of the South likely still kills civilians or military personnel. This gives the South reason to hit back and declare renewed war.

Nuclear detonations off of the coast of the peninsula are going to kill someone, especially when likely done pretty carelessly as the Norks have been known to be regarding ordinance of all kinds.

True, the only WI portion of this is if they were to use them for blackmail more aggressively.

If they detonated one in NK waters, everyone would be pissed.
If they detonated one in international waters, there would be far more severe implications, UN discussions, US buildup, Chinese anger, etc.
If they detonated on in SK waters, war begins and NK is blasted to bits.

Mainland China and Russia will probably undoubtably be very unhappy from the nuclear fallout caused by North Korea within their populous cities in the immediate vicinity in the region should NK decides to attack either South, East or Further East across the Pacific......

China will not hesitate to seize control and denuclearize it by force (i.e. depose the Kims), and they can do it with Russian, US and South Korean approval to boot. At this point, even a pro-Beijing puppet government would be considered an improvement.

Why would Japan or South Korea need to build their own nukes? They have a perfectly willing ally ready to blow North Korea up for them already.

all done...

If they detonate it in South Korean waters, it's all over for the north. Nuking an American ally means that the USA WILL end the regime, nothing else can be contemplated by Washington.

And decision makers that are captured will never again be free--if they survive. And--the consequences for other rogue nuclear wannabe states will be severe. I don't think that there will be any remaining tolerance for nuclear programs in states seen as likely to use them--one did, so that djinn is out of the bottle...

Perfectly willing? Would you be prepared to have your hometown nuked by NthK, perhaps by covert delivery, in a crisis having nothing to do with your country?

Japan and SthK might need nukes for the same reason that Britain needed them during the Cold War, because they were directly threatened in a way and in circumstances that might lead the US to not deliver on their nuclear umbrella promises.

No inheritance and the North Korean government is, they will likely blackmail the South Korean government by using nuclear weapons on one of their own smaller cities. We need to keep in mind that Kim jong-un does not care about his people, he only cares about reunification through violence.

At this point he only cares about surviving. Reunification is only rhetoric.
