Wi North defeats Robb in '94?

IOTL North lost by less than 3 points. Let's swing that and say that North wins. In a nationally safe Republican state, North easily wins another two terms in 2000 and 2006- probably retires in 2012. How would North be as a Senator? Would he ever seek the GOP presidential nomination?

North is a convicted felon and with his ego he probably makes controversial statements like when he talked about the bridge to across the Potomac as the Soul Brother's causeway. As a fiercely partisan he would be a dream Republican candidate. I think that he would have trouble in 2000 and certainly in 2006, when Virginia did send a Democrat to the Senate.

Didn't John Warner endorse Chuck Robb? Things get uncomfortable if North is elected without the support of Virginia's senior senator.

I don't think Olly is such a sure thing in either 2000 or 2006.

Mark Warner would be a formidable opponent should he run in TTL's 2000, and assuming the Dubya years go according to plan then Jim Webb is on standby for 2006 if North is still in office (or might Kaine be the one that year?)

I see North as a madkeen Iraq War supporter, perhaps even a bit too unhinged for his own good. Someone like McCain is, or at least was, good at communicating with centrist Americans on these issues. North, OTOH, might become something of joke, along the lines of the GOP congresscritter who invented freedom fries, or indeed any number of congresscritters who likes them some red-blooded 'Merkinism.

One thing for sure: George Allen won't become a US senator. This might actually increase his chances of becoming the Republican nominee for president in 2008.

Warner endorsed the independent candidate, former Virginia AG Marshall Coleman, who took 11% IOTL. Assuming things go as per OTL (yes, a liberal use of handwavium) then he can ride on Bush's coattails in 2000. Even IOTL in 2006 Allen lost by less than 500 votes, probably because of "macaca". So North might win a third term by a squeaker.

Oliver North is a pathological liar with some indication of mental instability. He held two command positions in the Marine Corps. The first was as a platoon leader in Vietnam. By all accounts he did well. His second command was as a company commander at Okinawa. He gave up his command after 29 days. The word is that he was hospitalized for mental instability.

North never held another command in his Marine Corps Career. Always staff/administrative positions.

Col. David Hackworth covered most of this territory during the senate race. He confronted North on a radio talk show. North refused to comment on any of Hackworth's allegations.

Although North has managed over the years to keep a great deal of this information covered up, in an election campaign, it will come out, and nothing can stop that.

I see him being censured by the Senate, and possibly removed, as the US Senate has the constitutional authority to determine it's own membership. The Senate may even refuse to seat North.

2000 I'm on the fence about North's prospects, but I'd consider a win there plausible, it told right

2006, OTOH, there's just no way he's surviving after the Iraq war goes bad, and he undoubtedly says some very crazy s***...

North lost in 1994. a Republican year. So his prospects for 2000 are far from certain. In 2006, his support for GW Bush and the Iraq War and his baggage doom him.

Virginia has been trending blue, RB. It is no longer a "nationally safe" Republican seat. Assuming North makes it to '06, Webb will beat him with no problem.

You know, most voters don't share your attraction to crooks, as was shown in that race and conservative Alaska in '08. Hell, you're even forgetting your own party's path to power - people turfed out the corrupt crooks, of course. And, what did Ollie violate the law to do? NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS, oh, boy - now, there's a route to popularity in Virginia.

No, it doesn't take alien space bats for him to get one win, but it's unlikely, and I'm thinking he's going to have a far harder time winning reelection, because he'd still be a crook who negotiated with terrorists and he'd have too many mouth discipline problems for purple VA. '06 is bat turf, because that was a revolt against people like him. He might even make Bush lose the narrow election in 2000 by reminding voters of just how nutcake and hypocritical GOP foreign policy is.

Bush 2000 had short coattails outside TX' cultural neighbors - remember, the Senate was 50/50. It took us Dems drinking stupid water after Florida '00 to give him any real margin in 02.

Right, he not only negoitated with a terrorist nations, he helped sell them weapons. That is a good issue for any opponent.

Mark Warner established himself as a major figure in Virginian politics with his race against John Warner in '96. With no incumbent Robb he might decide to run for the other seat in 2000, and North is North after all.

But if Ollie gets a second term he really is toast in 2006, as I can't see him avoiding the weird behaviour of someone like a Representative Curt Weldon, aka the GOP's cutprice Charlie Wilson of the post-9/11 era.

2006 is a bad cycle for conspiratorialists in US politics, particularly in a purple state like Virginia. I think a Jim Webb or an M. Warner or even a Terry McAuliffe would beat North like a redheaded stepchild if the colonel goes on the record with his "Saddam was behind 9/11" opinions as per OTL.
