To put it simply, is it possible for North Korea to set up a government that isn't a de facto absolute monarchy after the end of the Korean War. Were there people in the leadership or external forces that could have prevented the succession of Kim Jong-Il, or even depose Kim Il-Sung early? Note that this doesn't need to be a democracy or for the results to be better. Hell, it can even be worse. But AFAIK, the pre-Korean War communist leaders in South Korea could have stifled Kim's power, if not for the resulting stalemate OTL.
