WI: Non-dynastic North Korea after Korean War

To put it simply, is it possible for North Korea to set up a government that isn't a de facto absolute monarchy after the end of the Korean War. Were there people in the leadership or external forces that could have prevented the succession of Kim Jong-Il, or even depose Kim Il-Sung early? Note that this doesn't need to be a democracy or for the results to be better. Hell, it can even be worse. But AFAIK, the pre-Korean War communist leaders in South Korea could have stifled Kim's power, if not for the resulting stalemate OTL.

A setup similar to China's, where Kim Il-Sung has a lot more influence from the Party long-term. Kim had a lot more time past the fall of the USSR to build a dynasty as well, along with not dealing with a huge population increase a la China. So there are a few possibilities:

1. Kim dies sooner. That's the easiest way. No way does the KWP let his kid waltz into power in the 60s or 70s; someone else ends up being NK's Deng Xiaoping.

2. Kim needs more help running things and someone or a group of someones has enough influence on the regime that, when Kim's number comes up in 1994, there's a power struggle and another person takes over. Of course, given the famine, there's a definite possibility of civil war between a Kim faction and reformers, and the place could go straight to hell a la Somalia.

So technically, the dynastic rules have to be nipped in the bud. Sounds good. :3
