Would Ford still be VP? IIRC he was picked to replace Agnew because Watergate had begun to brew and everyone knew he stood a chance of ascending quite soon. Would Nixon a) want to pick a more electable Republican closer to him and thus groom him and b) be able to?
I think he would pick George Bush, as he considered doing that in 1968 and the two were on good terms.
I've heard John Connally suggested, but the problem is he wasn't liked by anyone other than Nixon.
I think Dole would be a better pick in the event that Agnew still resigns and Nixon has more freedom on his VP pick (but not enough to pick Connolly) as Dole would better appeal to Conservatives than Bush.
That's an interesting idea. In this scenario Dole probably beats Reagan and Rockefeller for the 1976 nomination, being the centrist and winning like Nixon 68 and then getting a narrow victory over the Democrat nominee. Who would that nominee be? How would the late 1970s go TTL? Going forward how would US politics and history be effected?
Reagan would have been the Republican nominee in 1976. OTL he almost defeated an incumbent President.
I think South Vietnam could stagger on a bit longer but given its fundamental weakness and that the US is wary of getting involved in Vietnam it would still probably fall. Thoughts on the fate of Vietnam?
