WI: No War of 1812?

So, would Canada be absorbed, or do something else entirely in the face of American Filibusters doing stupid things?

I'm not sure a filibuster would work all that well in a country that has already got more population than the midwest at the time, especially when the areas to the south are sparsely populated. There was some noise to support the 1837 rebellion in both halves of Canada but since neither Papineau nor Mackenzie had much success (they did have a victory or two but in the end they were barely a thousand over Canada, yeah) it died out. Of course, no war of 1812 may well mean a lot more liberals in the two Canadas and british governors not doing as much as OTL to placate the french or cut off american settlement for mainly strategic reasons (after all the first governor of Canada before the american revolution was sacked for not being conciliating enough to british traders, and without the US being a threat it might make everyone involved more complacent). Similarly, opinions between the people wanting intervention was also divided between annexionists and people who wanted a sister republic in Canada.

I never said that the filibusters would succeed. I was just wondering how Canada would handle the western war hawks stupid enough to provoke a response.

So, this might wind up to become an earlier Canadian formation?

I'm thinking it would be a sister republic, seeing as I'm still of the mind that Canada had too different of a mindset compared to the US.

Also, what would a longer intact Federalist Party do? I'm curious seeing that they were really gutted thanks to the now nonexistent War of 1812.

More and bigger Fenian raids, etc., might be enough to foster a Canadian identity and replace the 1812 threat.

American friendliness is much more likely to lead to an absorbed Canada.
