since we seem to have a rash of 1812 threads going lately, I thought I'd add to them. :) WI the US and UK don't quite go to war in 1812? Let us suppose that the whole impressment thing gets resolved peacefully, or maybe Napoleon is defeated a little earlier, and the US suddenly realizes that the UK can now gun for them alone? In any event, the war doesn't happen.

Personally, I think there would be some kind of US/UK war later on... when you read the literature of the time, it's obvious that the US was a bit...arrogant. They had the idea that their called-up militia forces could beat anyone, anywhere, and the RN was apparently never even considered. Without 1812 to put the issue to rest, it's likely there'd be a war sooner or later over Britain's plan to set up an Indian buffer state, or over the final border between the US and Canada.

Thoughts?
