WI: No struggle for the Nixon tapes

Kind of an oddly specific-WI but... what if Nixon handed over the unedited tapes and/or transcripts when originally asked, rather than calling on executive privilege and withholding them, or having to go through 18 1/2 minute gap thing, etc?

Would he be given a little more credit? Or would it be even worse for him? Etc.

Hmmm so I guess we just have to make it up, I think it probably had to do with him trying to cover up what the robbers did.

Hmm... I tend to think that Nixon was more or less innocent of the robbery attempt at Watergate. What got him was his paranoia and his Surgeon General telling him to fight the turning over of the tapes.

Nixon was mostly guilty of being a paranoid idiot and a republican.

I would think Nixon if he had turned over the tapes and went on national TV to ask forgiveness, he would have survived his second term.

I agree. Watergate was pretty much used as an excuse by the Democrats to take out Nixon. Not that I'm a Nixonphile(trickidickphile?)!

He'd probably be remembered as competent but controvertial.

Depends on what's on there, if there's anything that's really incriminating turning over those tapes could be the prelude to Nixon's resignation.

I realize now I made a very juvenile mistake when I wrote this thread. Think it's easy to guess what it is, but I won't say.

This is the kind of answer I was expecting. Pull a Checkers' Speech again. It worked once :p

No, because the Checker's Speech was insisting he had done nothing wrong.
