WI there were no sanctions against apartheid-era South Africa in the 70's and 80's?
I'm thinking here in particular of Western nations not having sanctions against SA.
What POD would this require to occur? My own personal view is that for this occur the main POD would be a different attitude among Western conservatives. The point arose in another thread (Larger South Africa) that the main reason for the sanctions against SA in OTL was the critical view Western conservatives held against apartheid. The left was always the home of most anti-apartheid movements, but it was the support or at least acquiescence of the right in nations like the UK and USA which allowed sanctions to go ahead. So I think a POD where Western conservatives openly support SA is required.
What would the effect of Western support for SA be on international relations. Obviously the rest of Africa would not be happy, but would it drive them further towards aligning with the Soviets or would African regimes adopt a more realpolitic approach to it?
Also, would attitudes change once the Cold War ends? This would cause one of the main reasons for any Western support of SA to disappear.
How much longer would white minority rule last in this ATL South Africa?
