WI: No Royalton Raid

The Royalton Raid was a raid on the Republic of Vermont by British-Led Mohawk Indians. The Natives won a victory, because they had done their raid and headed back north by the time they could ready the militia. So, what if a hunter in the woods had seen the native army approaching and snuck off to warn the people of Vermont about the impending threat so that they could fight the natives off.

What I am trying to do is create nationalism in Vermont, so that the Vermont Republic, which by the time of annexation were already self governing with a constitution OTL, would not want to be annexed by the union. Is this the best way to do that?

Even if the raid had failed I can't see that Vermont would have stayed independant of the USA. The only reason that it was not recogised as a state was due to boundary issues with New York, and these had all but been settled by 1787.

An independant Vermont would not have remained so for long, with the British to the north and the Americans to the East and South. It would be swallowed by one or the other very quickly.

It would be intersting to see how that would have affected the Americans if they took a nation by force (Indian nations not being counted of course) as they had always bought their territories before using money not guns.
