On the death of Pope Alexander VI (1492–1503) Georges Cardinal d'Amboises aspired to the Papacy. He had French troops at the gates of Rome, by means of which he could easily have frightened the conclave and induced them to elect him; but he was persuaded to trust to his influence; the troops were dismissed, and an Italian was appointed as Pius III (1503); and again, on the death of Pius within the month, another Italian, Julius II (1503–13), was chosen.
Cardinal d'Amboise received as compensation the title of papal legate for life in France and in the Comtat Vennaisin.
WI Cardinal d'Amboises had indeed intimidated the College of Cardinals with his army and forced them to elect him Pope in 1503 instead of Piccolomini and della Rovere? How is the absence of Pope Julius II affects History? And how is a French Pope affecting politics in Italy in the beggining of 16th century? Any thoughts?
