WI No PanAm?

How would air travel have developed (at least in the US) if Pan American Airways either never existed or folded early on? Say Juan Trippe stayed on Wall Street or died in plane over the Caribbean? Would another company just step in or would civilian air travel development be delayed (say no transpacific service untill after WWII)?

Well for one thing, National Airlines would be around for longer without the disastrous 1980 merger with Pan Am.

I think that TWA would probably fill in the international flight gap left by Pan Am, since it was one of the two "flagship" airlines pre-WWII. Maybe United Airlines could pick up the trans-Pacific market since they were OTL buyers of Pan Am's Pacific network.
