WI: No Newmarket Fire; Rye House Plot Succeeds?

In 1683, a number of plotters planned to assault and possibly kill King Charles II and his brother James, the Duke of York (both of whom were suspected of harboring Catholic sympathies) on their way back from the horse races at Newmarket; however, a fire broke out on the night of March 22, destroying half the town of Newmarket and causing the races to be cancelled... and, thus, Charles and James head back to London several days earlier than planned, thus unintentionally foiling the plot.

Had this fire not occurred, and James and Charles met with misfortune at the hands of the plotters on April 1, 1683 (as planned), what would've happened next?

I leave it to you. :)

I suspect that instead of a Glorious Revolution, there would have been a very quiet accession of William and Mary to the throne five years ahead of OTL. William would then have made sure everyone involved in the plot was hanged, drawn, quartered and pieces of them displayed prominently throughout London, just so everyone got the message that regicide was not an acceptable political maneuver. There might have been less of a crackdown on English Catholics afterwards — possibly even no Act of Settlement.

From what I recall, the plotters were angling to get Monmouth on the throne; that's pretty much a long shot, right?

Yeah, generally legitimate heirs were favored if they were available. Also, I think Monmouth would be too busy going "I never heard of these people! I know nothing!"

Just Mary.

The reason Williamandmary were made coregents was that it was William´s army of Dutch Republic that had conquered England. A popular proposal was to just make Mary alone Queen, with William as her husband holding no other office. But with Dutch conquering army, William was in position to object.

If Mary inherits as legitimate heiress then she is made Queen legitimately, without a foreign occupation army. Which means William remains just her husband. They may follow the precedent of Philip who was made King in title but without any powers, just for the duration of her marriage to Mary.
(Incidentally, Prince George definitely was not made King. Was there any attempt to do so?)
