WI no Morisco expulsion

What will be the long term effects of a large group of crypto Muslims living inside a Western European nation throughout the entire modern era?

They wouldn't remain crypto for much longer, eventually they would convert as did the 40% or so Moriscos that either evaded the expulsion, remained for other reasons or returned shortly after.

If the Spanish don't want to throw them off and have reasons to believe any given group is still practicing Islam they would deport them Iberia around like they did before the expulsions.

Depends on... do they live closely to each other? If yes then I see a possibility of a rebellion in which Spain needs to relocate them all over Iberia. The further they're away from Muslims, the likelier they lose their old faith and culture for the new one.

If no, they will assimilate among the Spanish.

There were areas where they accounted for about 60% of the population, and that's why the local nobility lobbied heavily against expulsion. IMHO you can't simply assimilate the majority of the population, as I see it, most of them would simply keep their beliefs private until there's a chance to come out, probably developing a somewhat syncretic faith, like Afro-American religions. What do you guys think?

Possible with a majority areas. But I don't see their secret beliefs in Islam would survive until today. At max the 1800s for several reasons.

I don't know how to solve the expulsion or relocation. Maybe the king agrees to send the same amount of people to the nobles domain. It can be Catholics from Galicia and Castille, it can be Italians from Sicily abd Naples. Sounds far fetched but who knows...

As a matter of fact a small community of Crypto-Jews was found in a small village in the middle of Portugal as late as the 1910's. Apparently they didn't know there were other Jews in the rest of the world. Look for the Belmonte Jews.

As for the Moriscos, being such a big community, they'll probably turn back to Islam as soon as there's freedom of religion. I bet the Spanish wouldn't allow a cultural reconnection with the rest of the Muslim World though.

The kingdom was broke, a truce with the Dutch was signed literally at the same day the king expelled the Moriscos. To simply ignore the Morisco issue would be smartest and easiest move.
